Celebrated Australian writer Geraldine Brooks had been working for two years when she bought her first home, a house in the Sydney inner-city suburb of Balmain.

Four decades later an article by Brooks, now a resident of Martha’s Vineyard in the US, suggests she epitomises the NIMBYism of landowners who oppose apartments that would force them to share their suburbs with more people.
