Sydney and Melbourne hotel operators are offering discounts of up to 40 per cent as they scramble to fill empty hotel rooms due to the coronavirus travel ban amid fears it will soon be declared a global pandemic.

Booking websites like Expedia are awash with big discount offers – from boutiques to five-star hotels – while the peak NSW tourism accommodation body says revenues in the Sydney CBD are down 20 per cent in February on last year.
