Australia's home-grown hotel empires are undergoing a metamorphosis, as three of the biggest groups shuck off the restrictions of their motel beginnings to compete better in the international market.
New hotel brands are being launched and the old chains are being overhauled, as the Australian Tourism Group (ATG), Southern Pacific Hotels Corporation (SPHC) and Flag International look for ways to expand in a restrictive market.
