On the second Saturday in March this year, NSW Deputy Premier and National Party leader John Barilaro held a dinner at the Queanbeyan Hotel on Canberra’s outskirts to celebrate 10 years in parliament.

The guest of honour was Peter V’landys. The Racing NSW chief executive and Australian Rugby League chairman admitted he didn’t like travelling outside of Sydney but wanted to pay tribute to a man who, like himself, was an outsider, ethnically and professionally, who challenged establishments almost as old as the state.
