Street works in Sydney's CBD have contributed to a 27 per cent slump in net profit in 1998-99 for retailer Gowing Brothers Ltd.

The company warned shareholders earlier in the year about the potential for the Sydney City Council's upgrading of the George Street pavement, outside the store.
