Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein abruptly quit politics on Monday, surprising the state and federal Liberal Party and declaring he had “nothing left in the tank”.

A day after campaigning alongside Prime Minister Scott Morrison ahead of the May federal election, the 57-year-old said he would resign from Tasmania’s Parliament as soon as a new state Liberal leader was elected.
