Two international insurance groups have expressed interest in acquiring cash-strapped New Cap Reinsurance Corp during talks with the company's co-founder and former chief underwriter, Mr Volker de Chelard.

US-based Houston National and Reliance Re, both of which won recent approval to operate in Australia, are waiting for New Cap to release its 1998 results before entering formal negotiations.
