Labor has agreed to wave through the lower house a bill to lower the threshold for expelling foreign visa holders convicted of violent crimes, avoiding an attempt by the government to expose the opposition as divided by a national security issue.

The government, which is trying to portray Labor as weak on national security, may push the bill to a vote in the Senate during budget week, the final two sitting days before the election, in a final bid to try to split the Opposition.
