ICAC report reveals depth of Berejiklian-Maguire relationship
Key Points
- Gladys Berejiklian breached public trust and engaged in corrupt conduct ICAC said
- She failed to alert ICAC to suspicions her secret lover, Daryl Maguire, was corrupt
- And she worked to shore up grants without disclosing the local MP was her boyfriend
- Despite the findings, ICAC did not recommend further action for Berejiklian
- But prosecutors should consider pursuing Maguire and two others, ICAC said
Gladys Berejiklian did not regard her relationship with Liberal MP Daryl Maguire significant enough to disclose to the cabinet when she was NSW Coalition premier from 2017 to 2021, but in private referred to him as her boss, communicated with him several times a day and discussed having a child with him.
An investigation by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption published on Thursday revealed the two politicians had a much closer relationship than either acknowledged, possibly to distance themselves from Mr Maguire’s lobbying of Ms Berejiklian and her government for his personal gain.
