Giant coal-fired power station should stay open, NSW review finds

The country’s largest coal-fired power station, Eraring in NSW, could stay open beyond its target shut down date in two years after a state government review recommended extending its life to shore up reliability during the energy transition as replacement projects run late.

NSW Energy and Environment Minister Penny Sharpe is expected to make an announcement soon on the fate of Eraring, after reports a reliability review had recommended striking a deal with owner Origin Energy to keep it open for longer.
