Social media is behind the alarming rise in extremism among young people that prompted Australia’s official terror threat level to be raised, experts say.

Political pollster Kos Samaras said it was very unlikely the trend would become a significant factor at the federal election, due by May, because fringe groups would be drowned out by the compulsory voting system.
