The Voice would lose credibility if it pushed trivial issues while ignoring entrenched Indigenous disadvantage, Noel Pearson said, as the federal Labor government struggled with whether the proposed advisory body would back shifting Australia Day.

Mr Pearson, the respected Cape York leader, told The Australian Financial Review the Voice could not waste finite political capital when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders needed urgent improvements to their quality of life.
