Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton say the US-Australia relationship will continue to thrive despite a change of president, while domestically the American election result reinforced concerns inside Labor over the role inflation played in Donald Trump’s victory.

“Not easy reading for incumbents,” texted a minister who was one of many MPs following the count during Question Time on Wednesday as Trump surged to victory over Kamala Harris.
