Union pay push isn’t helping Labor’s inflation fight
It is not necessary to have a 1970s-style wage-price spiral to cause the government grief. It’s enough for the RBA to say that wage increases are above the level that miserable productivity growth can sustain.
RBA governor Michele Bullock says that a lot needs to go Australia’s way to get inflation back to target, and prevent pre-election interest rate rises being put back on the central bank’s boardroom table as early as August. The undermining of the Albanese government’s inflation fighting credentials by its union allies is hardly helping her.
