Coalition backbencher Kevin Andrews has called for planned religious freedom laws to follow the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, balancing the rights of believers with the wider Australian community.

The former defence minister and high profile Catholic welcomed moves by Prime Minister Scott Morrison to pursue new religious discrimination laws before the end of 2019, saying sufficient time had passed since the introduction of same-sex marriage for a civil debate to take place.
