The Morrison government says Labor cannot be trusted to keep its no new taxes promises after shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers rejected adopting a limit on how much tax revenue a Labor government would collect as a proportion of the economy.
The Coalition has long operated under a self-imposed tax-to-GDP ratio of 23.9 per cent, but Mr Chalmers described such a cap as an arbitrary concept that was more about politics than sound economics.
