States back Commonwealth push for EV tax ‘solution’
Federal, state and territory treasurers have agreed to work on ways to develop a nationwide electric vehicle tax regime after the High Court overturned a fledgling Victorian government zero-emissions road user charge.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers will establish a “working group” with his state and territory counterparts to deal with the growing shift to EVs and low-emissions hybrids that is steadily eroding revenue from the Commonwealth’s 49¢ per litre fuel excise.
