State leaders in trouble as light emerges at end of COVID-19 tunnel
The premiers of Australia’s two biggest states are gasping for political air just as the prospect of a national consensus on opening up the economy is within reach.
“The people of this state know I have done nothing wrong. I never have and I never will,” a defiant NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said this week as details of her secret affair with disgraced former state Liberal MP Daryl Maguire exploded on to the public domain.
Earlier, amid the tragic results of the Victorian government’s botched hotel quarantine program, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews also defiantly declared: “I don’t run from problems and challenges.”
