Senior WA minister airs doubts on AUKUS submarine schedule

Western Australia’s defence industry minister has cast doubts over the construction and delivery schedule for Australia’s locally built nuclear-powered submarines, amid growing scrutiny of whether the ambitions are achievable.

Addressing defence contractors last week, Paul Papalia said he expected the navy to receive five US-built Virginia-class submarines, implying there would be delays with the future design – dubbed SSN AUKUS – that would be built for the British and Australian navies.
