Scientists and academics have topped the list of 2024’s Australia Day honours, as award recipients further question the meaning and purpose of the national holiday.

All four of those made companions of the Order of Australia – the highest honour – have senior university roles, and one said the recognition of academics was “a sign the country has grown up”.
