The execution-style shootings of two young police officers in Queensland has spurred action on a national firearms register, with premiers and chief ministers agreeing to progress implementation by the middle of the year.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess briefed Friday’s meeting of national cabinet about the rising threat of right-wing extremism in Australia, including the so-called sovereign citizen movement.
