Quantum a better bet than burning a billion on solar panels
But even if this is the right place to deploy such a huge sum, we know too little about whether this was the best way to spend it.
Gambling a billion dollars on Australian co-founded, California-based quantum computing firm PsiQuantum at least makes more sense than throwing a billion dollars into solar panels, a technology so completely commoditised that people in Europe install the panels as garden fencing because they’re so cheap.
Quantum computing is at the other end of the scale: it is potentially decisive 21st-century tech on the bleeding edge of science, where Australia has genuine advantages in research and investment and where a very real global race is happening.
