Public sector growing with Australia: ABS

The number of public sector employees has increased to 2.16 million, a rise of 14 per cent over the past decade but in line with Australia’s population increase over the same period.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics there were 254,000 Commonwealth government employees, 1,713,500 in state government and 192,500 in local government as at June 2022.
