Victoria records 216 new cases

Victoria has recorded 216 cases and recorded one death, a man in his nineties, taking the death toll to 23. Premier Daniel Andrews said the net increase of cases was 181 as a number of cases -35 - were reclassified. The state has now recorded 3560 cases.

He urged all Victorians to do their bit to help bring the numbers down. On the severe strategy that is in place to do just that he assured Melburnians the strategy "will work".

"But only if every single Victorian and the whole community that will ultimately benefit from that strategy - it only works if we all play our part."

"It is the simple stuff, the common sense, doing the right thing, the smart thing. That's how we will get to the other side of this. This is not an ordinary weekend. It is anything but that. You've got to be in your home."

He told residents of metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire they cannot go into regional Victoria as there are no cases in some parts of the state.

"We are being extraordinarily vigilant around that issue," he said.

Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the state was fighting over 100 outbreaks.

"Essentially we've got over 100 cumulative outbreaks now, so it's very difficult to speak to the 30 cases with each and every one of those outbreaks, but we are seeing single cases with staff members in aged care facilities."
