Victorian Liberal leader John Pesutto is set to face a leadership challenge on Friday after a bid to end a long-running dispute with rebel right-wing MP Moira Deeming backfired and triggered a rebellion.

Five opposition frontbenchers – including police spokesman Brad Battin, who is considered the most likely challenger to Mr Pesutto – on Sunday signed a petition to call a party room meeting on Friday to bring the issue to a head.
