In 2004, a young Labor senator called Penny Wong, who had been in parliament just two years, faced a terrible dilemma.

In an attempt to wedge the then Labor opposition led by Mark Latham, the Howard government introduced an amendment to the Marriage Act to define marriage as the “voluntarily entered union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others”.
