Australia’s decision to support Palestinian membership of the United Nations was no surprise to Jewish leaders, who say that it was the result of an aggressive months-long lobbying campaign against Labor MPs by their opponents.

The decision is a major shift for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, who had taken a neutral stance in the broader conflict between Jews and Palestinians, while supporting Israel’s war against Hamas, the terrorist group that attacked Israel on October 7.
