Anthony Albanese has stepped up his stability pitch to voters by disparaging the Greens as a party of extremists, and saying that only Labor is in a position to form a majority government at the next election.

The prime minister, who has confided several times privately he would never enter into an official power-sharing arrangement if reduced to a minority, said the Greens were a more radical proposition than 14 years ago when Labor was last in minority.
