‘It’s now time to step away’, Andrews says

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced his resignation after almost nine years in office, saying it was time to give the privilege of leading the state to someone new.

“Today I will again visit Government House and resign as premier and member for Mulgrave effective 5pm tomorrow,” Andrews said.

“When it is time, it is time. Recently, in talking to my kid and Cath (Catherine Andrews), thoughts of what life will be like after this job [have] started to creep in.

“I have always known that the moment that happens it is time to go and to give this privilege, this amazing responsibility, to someone else.

“It is not an easy job being premier of our state but [that] is not a complaint, that is just fact. It requires 100 per cent from you and your family. That, of course, is time-limited and now is the time to step away.”
