The federal government has set the scene for a fresh battle over unions by ramming its Ensuring Integrity Bill through the lower house in preparation for a second attempt at securing Senate passage when Parliament resumes in February.

Amid wild scenes which led at one stage to the temporary suspension of Parliament on its last sitting day for the year, the government used its numbers to ram the bill through without any debate.
