Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke will be challenged by a Sydney doctor as part of moves to channel anger among Muslims over the war in Gaza into a political movement threatening Labor in some of its safest seats.

Ziad Basyouny, a GP in Sydney’s south-west, will announce he will run as an independent for the seat of Watson on Tuesday morning in a suburban park in Greenacre, as the Greens plan to cause more parliamentary pain for Labor in the Senate on Tuesday with a pro-Palestine motion.
