Beijing has shifted its story over why a Chinese fighter jet dropped flares in the pathway of an Australian naval helicopter, as Anthony Albanese claimed China’s own words made it clear the Australians were operating in international waters.

China’s Defence Ministry now claims the Australian Seahawk helicopter had ignored earlier warnings to stay away after it was sent three times to spy on and “disturb” Chinese training drills in the Yellow Sea last week.
