Medibank hacker identified as Russian cybercriminal, sanctions invoked
An alleged Russian cybercriminal has been hit with sanctions after Australia accused him of being the mastermind behind the hack on Medibank and the theft of almost 10 million customers’ sensitive data.
The Albanese government said Aleksandr Ermakov would be banned from travelling to Australia and announced financial sanctions that make it an offence punishable by up to 10 years in jail to provide assets to him, or deal with his assets, including through cryptocurrency wallets or ransomware payments.
