One of the most vivid memories of the first Gulf War – the first conflict to play out across the world on live TV – was the US Patriot missile system intercepting Iraqi Scud missiles fired at targets in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

The Patriots’ success (although later contested) was seen as battle-forged proof that ballistic missile defence was possible.
