Letters: Bringing America together
Joe Biden and US divide, Xi Jinping’s conciliatory signal, Australia’s population, Putin’s threats, decarbonisation, Novak Djokovic and George Christensen.
I agree with Alexander Downer’s objective: restoring the US as a champion of liberal democratic values (“Biden must strive to bring America together again”, January 17). However, the emphasis you have placed on his preference for the Chicago school (of economics) over the “Peron school of economics” is unfortunate.
The Peron period in Argentina at least resulted in one good song (Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina). The pernicious impact of the Chicago school remains with us, and the neoliberal ideas it promulgated have spread like a virus, with worldwide effect. Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics is a useful tonic.
