It’s only a few days in to this federal election year and already Labor and the Coalition are rehearsing their lines.

The government is gambling on a promise of better times to come while the opposition is betting voters are so fed up they won’t buy that – and has been bolstered by a US presidential election result that suggests grievance is more popular than hope.
