Indigenous academic Marcia Langton wants the Albanese government to urgently plan for consultation in the event the Voice referendum fails, warning Australia’s “broken status quo” could see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people wiped out.
The co-author of a landmark report on a possible Voice to parliament, Professor Langton dismissed Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s calls for a second referendum if the No case wins on October 14, saying Indigenous Australians do not want symbolic recognition in the Constitution.
