Federal MPs are preparing to splurge more than $70 million on ultra-local programs ahead of the federal election in a bid to shore up their seats, with social media littered with callouts designed to woo voters with promises of cash.

Politicians from across the political spectrum have posted dozens of social-media messages over the past fortnight promoting open grant rounds such as the $10 million volunteer program, $28.4 million youth empowerment program, and $8.5 million for sport group travel to major competitions.
