President Xi Jinping is a bully but Australia needed to maintain a good relationship with China because of its economic importance to national prosperity, former prime minister John Howard said.

Addressing an Australian Strategic Policy Institute webinar with former Labor leader Kim Beazley on Wednesday, Mr Howard said the "great rivalry" between the US and China would continue in the post-pandemic era.
