Is disclosure enough to clear Albo’s Qantas flights with benefits?
Some might say upgrades are just a perk of the office. But the counterargument is that MPs, particularly those approving key aviation decisions, should be removed from the type of soft power Qantas seems to wield.
Anthony Albanese says that he has properly complied with the disclosure rules after receiving a reported 22 free Qantas flight upgrades worth tens of thousands of dollars for himself and his family members over the past decade and a half.
It’s a claim that has already been called into question by a story The Australian Financial Review published on Monday afternoon that revealed the prime minister did not declare thousands of dollars in business-class upgrades gifted to his former wife, NSW politician Carmel Tebbutt, by Qantas and its partner airline Emirates. Tebbutt disclosed the upgrades to the NSW Parliament register of interests but the federal guidelines state upgrades for spouses and dependent children “should be notified”.
