Greens promise $95b in new spending in one month

The Greens will urge the federal government to spend $8 billion over three years in rolling out 50¢ public transport fares nationally, taking spending promises made over the last month by the minor party to $95 billion.

Greens leader Adam Bandt says expanding the policy adopted in Queensland by both former Labor premier Steven Miles and his successor David Crisafulli would save commuters $2400 a year in Melbourne, $2160 in Sydney, $2006 in Perth, and $1872 in Adelaide. The parliamentary budget office found that if the policy started on July 1, 2025, it would cost $8.1 billion in the three years to 2027-28.
