Overseas “power couples” could be prioritised for visas to fill skills shortages under a Coalition government’s plan for a smaller, more targeted migration intake, countering business warnings that deep cuts would worsen labour shortfalls.

Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan signalled the need to put a “premium” on the partners of prospective migrants to ensure they made an economic contribution to Australia.
