Electric vehicles hit consumer speed bumps
Energy minister Chris Bowen doesn’t think hybrids offer a real advance in the transition to electric cars. Drivers disagree, and the road to a pure EV market is bumpy.
Jennifer HewettColumnistDonald Trump loves to warn that the Biden administration’s electric vehicle targets are “government assassination” of the US auto industry and jobs. But now that Elon Musk is a big backer of his presidential campaign, Trump is less dismissive of electric vehicles like Teslas – describing them as good cars, just “not for everyone”.
He wants people to be able to choose, he insists, as he praises petrol-fuelled cars and promises to end federal tax incentives for EVs. Given Trump’s capacity for changing his mind depending on political benefits and campaign donations, this won’t necessarily happen.
