Disinformation crackdown not aimed at ‘censoring internet’

Communications regulators have defended a proposed crackdown on misinformation and disinformation being circulated online, rejecting claims it will allow the government to become a “ministry of truth” censor of social media companies.

But appearing before a parliamentary inquiry on Wednesday, Australian Communications and Media Authority chairwoman Nerida O’Loughlin conceded the concerns of some social media companies were valid.
