Disaster management must change: royal commission

The bushfire royal commission has recommended the federal government play a more active role in combating natural disasters, including greater involvement for the military and in dire circumstances being able to intervene without a request from the states.

Royal commissioner Mark Binskin said the federal government should have new powers to declare a state of emergency, as he called for the establishment of a sovereign aerial firefighting fleet and greater clarity around when hazard reduction activities including burn-offs could be carried out.
