Expert advisers to the Albanese government’s two-year competition review were surprised the aviation sector had been carved out amid the political fracas over additional Qatar Airways flights being blocked.

Former federal treasurer Peter Costello also weighed into the debate, saying it was “hard to fathom” why more Qatar Airways flights into Australia were blocked to protect Qantas amid soaring airfares.
