The coronavirus crisis has highlighted the need for Australia to diversify its economy beyond Chinese markets, according to Trade Minister Simon Birmingham as he renewed Australia's desire to lower barriers with India after it refused to join a regional free trade bloc.

Addressing an audience of Australian and Indian business figures at an Asia Society event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Senator Birmingham said the two countries offered each other "economic depth" because of their cross-cutting interests.
