Chinese fighter targets RAAF plane with flares in South China Sea

An Australian surveillance plane has had a near miss in the South China Sea after a Chinese fighter jet released flares that came within 30 metres of the aircraft, while three Chinese warships are being shadowed as they sail off the Queensland coast.

Australian military officials lodged a formal protest through embassies in Canberra and Beijing over the “unsafe and unprofessional” flying by the pilot of the Chinese J-16 fighter jet on Tuesday afternoon.
