CFMEU ban to deny Labor millions in election cash
Labor’s move to ban donations from the CFMEU will deny the party millions ahead of next year’s federal election, with the powerful United Workers Union and the conservative “Shoppies” expected to extend their influence.
Donating more than $3 million to Labor in the year before the 2022 federal election, the CFMEU was the party’s top single donor for Labor’s victory. Since 2019-20, the union has made donations to Labor totalling $6.2 million, including cash and in-kind contributions to state ALP branches around the country.
