Business hopes of rebooting relations with Beijing by talking up economic links are set for a blow, with Trade Minister Simon Birmingham unlikely to attend China's top trade fair in November because of Australia's international travel restrictions.

The China International Import Expo is scheduled to go ahead in Shanghai in November and is being billed as China's chance to tell the world it is open for business after the strains of the global pandemic.
